Elastic Rate Control

Isometric and elastic rate control devices are most compatible with a rate control mapping. However, the effect of elastic stiffness has not been thoroughly investigated nor its interaction with Control-Display gain (CD gain). In a controlled experiment, we investigate these factors as well as user feedback regarding ease of use and fatigue. We found that the performance profile of CD gain vs. time has a U-shape, with different profiles for different stiffness levels. Once the optimum CD gain is chosen, we found performance across stiffness levels to be similar. However, users preferred lower stiffness and lower CD gain levels due to increased controller displacement. Based on these results, design guidelines for rate control devices are given.
